Our theme for the week is Celebrate Your Freedom to Read! The last week in September marks the American Library Association's annual Banned Book Week.
The purpose of Banned Book Week is make those aware of the books that have been challenged/banned and encourgage all to understand the value of having our own CHOICE to read any book we want.
To celebrate Banned Book Week, Mrs. Y., the librarian has created a school-wide Spirit Week honoring our freedom to read!
- Monday: Lights out during reading? Don’t be in the dark about Banned Books!
- Tuesday: I am in the Banned! Sign the banner in the library of books you have read that have been banned.
- Wednesday: Patriotic Day. (Wear Red, White and Blue) Celebrate our freedom to read what we want to read.
- Thursday: Banned Books SPIRIT. Wear school colors to show you know.
- Friday: No school for students! What a perfect day to read a book, perhaps even one that was banned or challenged. Check out a list of titles at 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books: 1990-1999 or 100 Top Banned/Challenged Books: 2000-2009.
Watch this video to give you another perspective about censorship.
Think of your all time favorite book! Imagine not having the opportunity to read that book because an individual believed it to be inappropriate for ALL to read.
Describe how you would feel if you were the guy in the video above.
What is the one book that you couldn't imagine not having the chance to read? Why? Describe your reaction if someone told you that you could NOT read that book. How would it compare to the guy's reaction the video above?

If there was a book that I would not imagine not reading is "Diary of a Wimpy kid sunny days".Why is because i love to read those books and they are funny.It would compair to the guys reaction in the viedo becauseit probly wont let me read that or say the title of the book.

If someone told me i could not read those books i would not read any books because those books are my favorite i would bo so mad.The guy in the video was getting mad and frusterated just like i would!

ReplyDeleteBand book week is about people celebrating the purpose of the past books that are not age material.Most people band books because it has curse words or talks about the bible.And some books are not bad. It is just parents do mot want their children to read books that are not are not right for them.

I dont have a certine book i want to read, i dont think iv had a specifice book besides the book thats called, The Vampire Diaries by: L.J Smith. It is a really good book so far. Anyone who reads it will think its good to.

ReplyDeleteIf I was the guy in the video I would get so frustrated, and not be able to functun if I couldent read books that someone said where in imporbet for me to read. I think that they should band there kids from reading it but they can not tell oter kids ther not allowed to read somithing. I could not imagine not being able to read A Child Called It, because it is a tear jerking harte stopping book. If someone said that I couldent read that book I would tell them that they can't stop me from liking or having this book because it is mine and me parents if i choose to read it
ReplyDeleteI would get really mad if I was the guy in the video.I can't imagine not reading Where's Waldo becauseI always look for Waldo with my little brother. If someone said that I couldn't read that book both me and my brother would be mad. I wouldn't get confused of why they would be "bleeping" me and not letting me see which books they won't let me read I would either get upset or mad.

ReplyDeleteI would feel very angry if someone said I couldn't read my favorite book, Dragons Keep! I would probably argue with them and make their life miserable if they said I couldn't read it. I have been known to hold agrudge for a good four months. I don't think my reaction really compares to the guy aboves reaction. My favorite book is Dragons Keep because it tells of how an ingenious princess overcomes the silence brout about by a dragons promise.

ReplyDeleteI don't have a favorite book but I know I would go bezerk if I couldn't read the book I really wanted to and I don't think I would give up so esaly as the guy in the video did.

I would be so mad if it got banned because it is very good book. If someone told me not to read the book, I would be mad because this is a free country and they don't own me. ReplyDeleteI would feel really mad because one of my favorite books are gone and i can't read it. I couldn't imagine "Diary of a Wimpy kid", that is one of my all time favorite books. It's one of the funniest books i have read in whole life. I would let people banned it because i would stand up for that book to keep it off the banned list, plus everyone should give a book a chance before you banned it.

My favorite book is Because of Winn Dixie. I would be furious if I couldn't read a book of MY choice, Also I don't see why they would even have a reason to ban that book anyway because there is really nothing bad in it. The person in the video seemed like he was very upset about it too.

I would be very upset if I couldnt read the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas because it iz the best book I have ever read and sometimes people ask if I have ever read it and so i tell them bits and pieces of it. I would tell the person who said that I wasn't aloud to read it that it is a stupid rule and that the teachers tell us to read all the time but then some try to take books away. I think thata my reaction might be way different because I would go on and on until the book was taken out of jail.

I would go crazy if i could not read the book of my choose there is no point of reading if you don't like the book. My favorite book is Goosebumps and if it got band I would sew the people who banned it then I would try to make my owne horror book. ReplyDeleteThe one book i could not imagine not being able to read is "Pictures of Holliss Wooods." The reason i would hate to not being able to read this is because it is so amazing.It makes you have tons of emotions and you just dont want to put it down. I cried of happiness and sadness and even anger!The book was so overwelmingly amazing!If someone told me i could not read this book my jaw would drop and i would most likely cry becasue the book is so great.I think i would act worse than the guy on the video because the book is so important to me that I would go histerical! i would absolutly be crushed!

Because Breaking Dawn has some stuff that parents would not like. If someone told me that I could not read Breaking Dawn I would be mad and sad at the same time. I don't want anyone to ban The Last Olympian, because that is my most favorite. Why would someone ban a book just because millions of people like it? I hope nobody bans my favorite book(s).
